Individual Membership of the Association is open to anyone, competitor or not, who supports the objectives and aims of the Association, irrespective of whether they are part of a BDA Member Crew or Associate Organisation. However, Crew or Associate Member Representatives holding Voting Rights on behalf of that Member cannot claim Individual Members’ Rights at the same Meeting.

Full Individual Members are entitled to all the benefits of Membership and have Voting Rights at formal Meetings of the Association, except where matters involving a change to the BDA Constitution are concerned. Only Crew Representatives can vote on Constitutional matters. BDA Individual Membership is divided into four classes:-

BDA Full Individual Membership is for those who are committed to the sport. They receive Public and Personal Insurance cover, BDA Publications, Voting Rights and Representation Rights, plus discounts on BDA Merchandise and Services. Full Individual Membership is compulsory for BDA Licensed Race Organisers, Chief Officials, Technical Race Officials includng trainees, Coaches, members of the Coaching Scheme who hold either a Basic or Advanced Helm Certificate, members of the GB Squad, and Elected Members of the BDA Executive Committee. It is not linked to Crew Membership.

Full Individual Membership entitles the member to speak and vote at BDA General Meetings. Full Individual Members, if they are also nominated for another BDA Membership category, e.g. as a Crew Representative, are only allowed to speak and vote in one capacity. Cost from January 2010 is £32.00 per person per year.

Juniors are classed as anyone under the age of 18 on the 1st January. Cost from January 2008 is £20.00 per person per year.

Basic Individual Membership

From 2008, this membership category no longer exists. 

Membership is for those racers who take part in dragon boating as a member of a BDA Registered Crew, but who are not otherwise BDA Individual Members. As part of the application process for Sports Council Grant Aid, governing bodies are expected to show that all participants in their sport are members of the governing body. Thus a new membership category of Racing Member has been introduced. It is aimed at those racers who are not members of the BNTS, and are not qualified as Club or Race Helms, Race Officials or Coaches, who race in a BDA Registered Crew. Cost from 2010 is £16.00 per person per year.

Junior Racing Membership

Junior Racing Membership is for those juniors who take part in Dragon Boating as a member of a BDA Registered Crew but who have no BDA qualifications and are not a member of the BNTS or GB Squads. Juniors are classed as anyone under the age of 18 on the 1st January. Cost from 2010 is £10.00 per person per year

A BDA Individual Member must have BDA Membership to at least the minimum option available to him or her dependant upon their individual status e.g. If a Crew Paddler (Racing Member) is also a BDA Helm, then he or she must have at least Full Individual Membership.
