The British Dragon Boat Racing Association is the governing body of dragon boat racing in Great Britain. Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing and most exciting water sports you can take part in. The BDA is responsible for all aspects of the sport from community development up to managing British teams racing abroad. An original traditional Teak Chinese Dragon Boat will get a new lease of life with disadvantaged young people in Germany. A non commercial, government funded organisation, Zaug Gmbh. based in Giessen, Germany, who specialise in educating young people, will be passing on the centuries old secret of wooden boat making, usually passed from Father to Son, throughout China.
This boat has a rich history, as one of the first three traditional Teak Dragon Boats donated by the Hong Kong Tourist Association in 1980 to kick start Dragon Boat Racing in the UK. The British Dragon Boat Association and the International Dragon Boat Federation have donated the boat to the organisation which will provide apprenticeships in carpentry and will restore the Teak Boat in time for a Dragon Boat Festival in June 2010. The boat was collected this week from a muddy, rain sodden Hurleyford Farm, having been cared for and stored for the last year by Henley Dragon's. It begins its long journey to Germany, and at over 40 feet long and weighing in at 2 tons, it's no mean feat. |
