disappointed in the publicity for the Euro Champs - 2012/07/30 13:26
I went up to watch our nations finest competing at the European Championships at the weekend and although all the teams looked fantastic, and raced hard and did their countries proud..I can't help but think that it wasn't an inspiring show. Not on behalf of the teams as they were fantastic, but that it looked like the organisation of the event was so amateurish.
firstly, the only people that seemed to be there to see it were friends, families and current dragonboaters. I've spoken to a few of my friends in Nottingham who didn't even know that there was an international event happening on their doorstep.
I love this sport and would hate to see it die simply because we don't take the opportunities to encourage a new generation of dragonboaters when we have the ideal opportunity right in our own back yards.
Of course, I do understand the massive effort that goes into organising an international event like this, and I offer praise to the IDBF and the BDA for bringing the event to the UK but to go to all that effort and then find that nobody turns up to watch must be considered a disappointment.
It was an opportunity to really showcase the sport and I feel it was wasted.
Well done to the GB teams however and here's hoping they can build on that success at the world championships next year.
