Towing boats overseas
Important information for clubs transporting dragon boats overseas
Since August 2025, new rules have applied to UK trailers travelling internationally.
Any UK trailer with a gross weight over 750kg must now be registered before it can be taken to or through most countries in Europe, apart from Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain. This includes dragon boat trailers.
Registered trailers must display an additional trailer registration plate when travelling internationally.
At the time of writing (May 2026) costs were:
- £26 to register a trailer for the first time
- £21 to issue a new registration certificate for a new registered keeper
- £10 for a replacement UK trailer registration certificate
Further information and registration details are available on the UK Government website: Trailer registration guidance
Clubs planning to take their boat to European events such as the Vogalonga should ensure they comply with these requirements well in advance of travel.
Clubs are also reminded to check:
- The plated weight of their trailer
- The towing capacity of the towing vehicle
- The combined towing limits for the vehicle and trailer
- Driver licence entitlement for towing
Some dragon boat trailer and towing vehicle combinations may exceed legal towing limits if not properly checked.
Responsibility for ensuring vehicles, trailers and drivers comply with legal requirements rests with the club and vehicle owner/operator.
Clubs should also ensure that:
- Trailers are roadworthy and appropriately maintained
- Loads are properly secured
- Insurance covers international towing where required
- Drivers are familiar with any additional requirements in countries being visited
